I
wish I had a copy of the nationally televised 1963 Miss Teenage America
Pageant but we weren't very techno hip in those days.
What an experience as a 15-year-old. The irony of the timing is that
I answered my question about who do I most admire with an
impassioned reply about our wonderful First Lady, Jackie Kennedy. One
week after the contest, JFK was assassinated on the same parade route
where I had ridden the week before with the other contestants, The Dallas
Cowboys and Governor John Connelly.
I started modeling and doing commercials at age 14 and when my mom and
I were selected as the original Ivory Liquid look-alikes, we were flown
to New York and treated like celebrities. It
was my first big taste of show biz life and, oh yes, I liked it very
much!
I did over 100 national and regional commercials in the next few years
and paid my way through college. With my degree in theatre from the
University of Miami, graduating magna cum laude, I landed my first movie.
Jamie Leigh Curtis wasnt the only B Movie Horror Queen
out there. If you can ever get your hands on Bob Clarks cult classic,
Children Shouldnt Play With Dead Things (available
here) youll see a very young, very
bra-less Jane Daly. Its a real scream and my two sons love to
show it to their friends. They rag on my 70s bellbottoms and my
astrological belt.

I moved to New York in 1972 and went on to do more commercials, several
prominent stage roles including a national tour of Godspell,
and productions of Sweet Charity and Fiddler on the Roof. But the lure
of Hollywood was strong and I knew that was where I had to be. California
here I come.
My
life changed forever when I was cast in the new upscale soap opera Capitol.
Talk about a classy cast. Caroline Jones, Rory Calhoun, Connie Towers,
Ed Nelson. The real deal. My character took off with a bang as the "hooker
with the heart of gold" that somehow touched America's hearts and
was one of the most popular characters
on the show. I also met my future husband Duncan Gamble who played a
nasty private investigator trying to ruin me at every turn. I must have
loved it because we got married 7 weeks later.
I went from one major sitcom pilot to the nextstarring opposite
Dennis Dugan, Rory Calhoun, Rodney Dangerfield, Dean Jonesand
finally hit pay dirt opposite Burt Young in Roomies for
NBC. It didn't last more than a year but now I was officially an actress
with a series.
Hollywood has given me a wonderful career opposite great stars like
Jimmy Stewart, Donna Mills, Bruce W illis,
James Farentino, Bobby Blake (yes, that Robert Blake), Heather Locklear,
Jay Thomas, Michael Fox and the late, great Nell Carter. There are many
more but one of my favorite memories is the wonderful time spent opposite
Michael Landon on Highway to Heaven just one year before he died. What
a man. How we all loved him. He always made sure everybody got paid
well and never let the show interfere with family time. 5 o'clock, finished
or not, everyone went home.
I think where most of the younger generation remembers me from was my
stint on Beverly Hills 90210. I played "Maggie the Malibu Mystic"
as Luke Perry and I dubbed her.
She was sort of a shrink and a hypnotist taking Dylan back in time to
re-live his interesting past lives. Was that a high point or a low point
for 90210? It was great for me and I made the tough transition through
my 40's with ease.
When the late, great, wonderful Frieda Rothstein cast me opposite Amy
Madigan
in Lifetime's Cable Ace winner, And Then there Was One, I was officially
part of the Hollywood "A" Team.
And finally the two "Dalys" meet. What fun it was to finally
work with Tyne on Judging Amy. She is truly one of the most generous
and talented actresses in this crazy town. I told her the story about
my first year
in Hollywood when I was broke and trying to raise my first son on my
own and I mistakenly got one of her residual checks for Cagney and Lacey.
It would have been so easy to change a few letters and cash that check.
But, my good Catholic upbringing sent the check back to Screen Actors
Guild explaining the mistake. Tyne said, "Your karma's gotta be
really good."
Tyne's conclusion about my karma was correct. After 21 years, Duncan
and I are still happily married. Our son Grady is graduating from High
School this June and off to college. My oldest son Mike is a successful
Stedicam operator on the East coast.
I'm currently in development with my own show being directed by my husband.
In the meantime you can catch me in up-and-coming episodes of UPN's
Girlfriends.
I'll keep you posted
as my career continues its wild ride through Showbiz!
